Anyone who's been in a retail store over the past few weeks has had to notice the Christmas push.  Pre-Halloween, these money machines know they have to expand the Christmas Holiday season to compete with on-line and other walk in retail outlets.  But, it takes something away from the whole experience, like Thanksgiving (which I saw less than half a shelf dedicated to in one store) being the kick-off of the Christmas season, ala Miracle on 34th St.
